Memorial Day – Penn Branch residents who served

We salute all of those who served.   Several former residents of Penn Branch are interred at Arlington National Cemetery.   Here’s a few facts about some our residents who served:

Bob Strickland was a mentor for aspiring minority journalists.Chief Master Sargent Bob Strickland (1931-2008) USA 9 Reporter,  3 time local Emmy winner, 20 year career in the Air Force; Born Rupert Strickland in Rainbow City, Panama Canal. He co-founded with the late ABC broadcaster Max Robinson a mentoring program for aspiring minority journalists, which launched numerous broadcasters on their careers.   Spouse of Penn Branch resident Janet Strickland.   Janet Strickland is chair of the PBCCA hospitality committee.

 

Lt. Col. Buffington E. FallsLt. Colonel Buffington E. Falls. (1928-2014)  Spouse of Penn Branch resident Janet Falls.  Lt. Falls was a mentor an strong supporter of youth in DC public schools and youth in the Penn Branch Community.  He and his wife Nita (deceased) moved to Penn Branch in 1965, and purchased his home from the developer  After Nita’s death, he later married Janet Falls is still active in the community.

 

Master Sargent Ludwig Seitz (1905-1988) – Spouse of Veronica Kosco Seitz (1910-1999); The Seitz family built their home on the 3600 block of Highwood in the 1940’s.  Ms. Seitz was known for garden which was featured in several garden magazines.  She was a strong supportor of Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church.  The Seitz family came from a strong military family which included nephew General Edward C. Meyer, former Chief of Staff US Army.

April 12 Guest Speaker: Raymond Bell, H.O.P.E. Project

We’re pleased to also have as our guest at the April 12 Penn Branch Citizens Civic Association meeting, Raymond Bell, founder of Project H.O.P.E. which located on the second floor of the Penn Branch Shopping Center.

Raymond Bell 

Raymond E. Bell is the founder of R. Emmanuel Bell Consulting, a training and facilitation company. Mr. Bell is a social entrepreneur, keynote speaker and facilitator. He is devoted to teaching and coaching young adults how to become I.T. professionals. Through his workshops, courses and coaching programs Mr. Bell shows young adults how to get out of the unemployment line and on a career path.

Raymond’s passion is to empower young people to take ownership and control of their own destiny. In 2009 Bell founded The H.O.P.E. Project, also known as the “Harvard of the Hood”, an I.T. career training program. The H.O.P.E. Project has been called one of the best I.T. career training programs in the country by the President of the Help Desk Institute (HDI). Graduates earn an average annual salary of $43,000, working on major government contracts, such as Lockheed Martin, World Bank and CACI.

Mr. Bell is considered one of the leading experts on I.T. career training and workforce development in the United States. Mr. Bell has received numerous awards for his work including the 2014 R.I.S.E. Demonstration Center Innovator of the Year, 2014 BDPA Washington DC Chapter Member of the Year, 2012 National Black Caucus of State Legislators, Nation Builder Award Recipient, for his outstanding work developing world class I.T. professionals.
