Pepco/ Execelon Merger Update

DC Public Services Commission is hosting a series of hearings on an important issue that involves your electrical services and possibly your wallet.

  • Are you aware that the Chicago based company Exelon, is seeking to merge with PE­PCO?
  • Are you aware that there may be changes to your services and rates over the next few years?
  • Are you aware that your representatives on the District Council and the DC Public Services Commission need to approve this merger?
  • Are you aware that your Council representatives, PEPCO and Exelon need to hear your opinions before they proceed?
  • Are you aware that once this merger is done, it’s done?

This is not simply a takeover and name change, but something everyone in DC, especially east of the river residents, should know about and express their opinions on.  This merger can have a significant effect on not only the service you receive but also possibly the rates you will pay.  Please reach out to PBCCA Legislative Chair, Laura Richards if you have additional questions or comments at: Legislative@PBCCA.org.

2014 Holiday Celebration

Please join us in extending branches of holiday cheer with our neighbors as we share their culinary delights at our next community meeting.   We welcome contributions of your favorite dish, dessert or, click here to make a financial contribution to support our “Culinary Branches of Holiday Cheer”.

The celebration will begin immediately following our community meeting on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.    If you wish to contribute food, please send an e-mail to let us know what dish you will provide and the number of people it will serve. We are also looking for vegetarian and gluten free dishes for our neighbors with special diets.

Meet Our New Resident: River Asata Smith

Former PBCCA VP, Ayanna Smith and her husband welcomed, Ms. River Asata Smith,  our newest resident to their home on May 30. 2014.  River SmithMs. River was born at George Washington Hospital in Washington, DC and weighed-in at 8.15lbs!  PBCCA and the Penn Branch community congratulates the Smith Family on this beautiful, new addition to their family (and our neighborhood)!

Bobby Chandler featured on PBS ‘History Dectectives’

Penn Branch resident, Bobby Chandler was featured in a recent episode of the hit PBS series ‘History Detectives.’  The show investigates the famously controversial image of Silas Chandler, a slave from Mississippi (and ancestor of Mr. Bobby Chandler), seated next to his owner, Andrew Chandler. Both men are brandishing weapons and wearing Confederate Army uniforms. It remains one of the most iconic images of our Civil War and for many years has inspired a ‘divisive and often confused debate about race relations in the Confederacy and the existence of black Confederate soldiers.’

Penn Branch featured in U.S. Coast Guard commercial

A 60-second commercial for the US Coast Guard features a returning war veteran and his family riding through our neighborhood and ‘arriving home’ on Texas Avenue SE. The video ‘Individuals with Disabilities (60 second)‘ was filmed last summer in Penn Branch and also features the new USCG Headquarters at the Department of Homeland Security in Ward 8.  It was officially released last week on www.coastguardcivilian.com, the civilian recruitment web site for US Coast Guard.

Individuals with Disabilities (60 second)‘ was produced by Ascender Communications and written and directed by Penn Branch resident and current PBCCA parliamentarian, Paul Grant. ‘Penn Branch, with its’ tree-lined streets, coiffed lawns and beautiful brick colonials, offered our production an ideal setting to tell this all-American story,’ says Grant, ‘The Coast Guard was excited very about having that option.’

Honoring their commitment to an inclusive work environment, the US Coast Guard welcomes and encourages applications from persons with disabilities. Disability employment applicants for Coast Guard jobs do not have to be current or former federal employees. The :60-second commercial highlights how the Coast Guard will provide job accommodations and other related services to ensure meeting the needs for successful performance of persons with disabilities.
