Bobby Chandler featured on PBS ‘History Dectectives’

Penn Branch resident, Bobby Chandler was featured in a recent episode of the hit PBS series ‘History Detectives.’  The show investigates the famously controversial image of Silas Chandler, a slave from Mississippi (and ancestor of Mr. Bobby Chandler), seated next to his owner, Andrew Chandler. Both men are brandishing weapons and wearing Confederate Army uniforms. It remains one of the most iconic images of our Civil War and for many years has inspired a ‘divisive and often confused debate about race relations in the Confederacy and the existence of black Confederate soldiers.’

Penn Branch featured in U.S. Coast Guard commercial

A 60-second commercial for the US Coast Guard features a returning war veteran and his family riding through our neighborhood and ‘arriving home’ on Texas Avenue SE. The video ‘Individuals with Disabilities (60 second)‘ was filmed last summer in Penn Branch and also features the new USCG Headquarters at the Department of Homeland Security in Ward 8.  It was officially released last week on www.coastguardcivilian.com, the civilian recruitment web site for US Coast Guard.

Individuals with Disabilities (60 second)‘ was produced by Ascender Communications and written and directed by Penn Branch resident and current PBCCA parliamentarian, Paul Grant. ‘Penn Branch, with its’ tree-lined streets, coiffed lawns and beautiful brick colonials, offered our production an ideal setting to tell this all-American story,’ says Grant, ‘The Coast Guard was excited very about having that option.’

Honoring their commitment to an inclusive work environment, the US Coast Guard welcomes and encourages applications from persons with disabilities. Disability employment applicants for Coast Guard jobs do not have to be current or former federal employees. The :60-second commercial highlights how the Coast Guard will provide job accommodations and other related services to ensure meeting the needs for successful performance of persons with disabilities.

Ward 7 Happy Video Shows Diversity and Pride of Ward 7, Washington DC East of River Logo

Today, Mae H.  Best, Executive Director of East River Family Strengthening Collabirative, Inc. (ERFSC), an 18 year old community based  agency located in Ward 7, Washington DC,  released a video capturing the essence of Ward 7 using the “Happy” song made popular by Pharrell Williams.  The video was shot over three weeks at various locations in Ward 7 including Fort Dupont Ice Skating Rink, The Shimp Boat, the new Park 7 Apartments, The Nats Academy, Francis Gregory and Dorothy Height Libraries, and The Chateau to name a few. The video is very colorful and depicts fun, diverse and Happy Ward 7 residents showing their happiness in various ways.

Even though all locations in the ward were not captured, Ms. Best feels that “we captured a new and improved Ward 7 where people love to work and live.  That was my original intention, and this video received so much community support that we feel it necessary to do something similar again because it really brought us together (and it was fun).  This video is the beginning of new ways we will showcase the work, pride and promise of our Ward 7.”

ERFSC would like to thank everyone who participated in the Ward 7 Happy Video including Mayor Vincent Gray, Councilmember Yvette Alexander and her team, the ERFSC staff, and all the stars that are too many to name. The video is being launched on ERFSC’s website, their Youtube page (EastRiverFamily) and their social media networks.  The Ward 7 Happy Video was videographed by Brandon Best and Nicole Whitmire and edited by Brandon Best with creative direction and coordination by Mae H. Best, Rosie Parke and Rudy Davis.

Penn Branch Shines at Annual Dinner Dance

Friday the 13th turned out to be a very good day for those who attended the Penn Branch Community Association’s annual dinner dance and swearing-in of new officers.  The event was held at the Washington Navy Yard and hosted by long-term resident, Mr. Gilbert Bussey.

Attendees enjoyed a great program, wonderful food, and ended the night with great conversation and dancing.  The night was fun and provided an opportunity for long-time and new neighbors to meet and interact with residents from neighboring communities, ANC commissioners, and others.  Ward 7 Councilwoman Yvette Alexander and mayoral candidate Muriel Bowser were also in attendance and welcomed attendees.

PBCCA dinner dance co-chairs, Toni Reeves and Eloise Price said “we were pleased with the stronger than expected turnout, and we were especially pleased with support from neighboring community associations.”

Pamela Toure, wife of past president, Kweku Toure, gave out prizes to winners of the community quiz.  The dinner dance would not have been a success without the hard work of many of those in the community who sold tickets and advertisements.

A special thanks to CH2M Hill, HDR, Inc., Marriot Hotels (George Washington), Councilwoman Yvette Alexander, Crystal Florist, R3 Graphics and Beddgroup for supporting the program, and to Reverend Kendrick Curry Ph.D., and wife Reverend Karen Curry for their many contributions and support of the community.

Also, thanks to Councilmembers, Muriel Bowser, Phil Mendelson, Tommy Wells, David Grosso , Ward 7 school board member and Hillcrest Community Civic Association President Karen Williams, and Ward 7 Democrats President Ed Portillo!
