O Street Wall (Clean Up)

/

Last spring, the PBCCA Public Works Committee sent a letters to residents whose houses boarder the O Street Wall to make sure that all weeds, grass, and trees are at least 3 ft away from the wall. Most residents have done a stellar job of managing their yards and avoiding any impacts to the structural integrity of the wall. However, several homes still have weeds growing out of their yards and hanging over the wall itself.

The city will be coming out in January 2015 to clear these areas at a cost to each home.

Park Restoration

/

DC Water is coordinating with the District Department of the Environment to restore the streams and replace the sewers that run through Pope Branch Park,   which extends from Ft. Davis Drive East to I-295 West. Restoration work will stabilize approximately 4,700 feet of stream located inside the Park from Fairlawn Avenue, S.E. to Texas Avenue, S.E.   The project started in 2013 and is expected to be completed in 2015. http://www.dcwater.com/workzones/projects/pdfs/pope_branch.pdf

Hiking, Biking and Streams

The United States Park Service last year started major improvements on the Fort DuPont Park trail system. The seven mile Hiker/Biker Trail connects six Civil War earthwork fortifications for mountain bikers and hikers to learn about the rich history of the Civil War Defenses of Washington while exercising in a beautiful mature forested park.

Pepco/ Execelon Merger Update

DC Public Services Commission is hosting a series of hearings on an important issue that involves your electrical services and possibly your wallet.

  • Are you aware that the Chicago based company Exelon, is seeking to merge with PEPCO?
  • Are you aware that there may be changes to your services and rates over the next few years?
  • Are you aware that your representatives on the District Council and the DC Public Services Commission need to approve this merger?
  • Are you aware that your Council representatives, PEPCO and Exelon need to hear your opinions before they proceed?
  • Are you aware that once this merger is done, it’s done?

This is not simply a takeover and name change, but something everyone in DC, especially east of the river residents, should know about and express their opinions on.  This merger can have a significant effect on not only the service you receive but also possibly the rates you will pay.  Please reach out to PBCCA Legislative Chair, Laura Richards if you have additional questions or comments at: [email protected].

Tips to Help Manage Our “Furry Friends”

At our last meeting, we heard from CPL. Megan Holeva and Stephanie DeMoss, Representatives of the Washington Human Society about pets, feral animals and wildlife.  Here are a few tips to help you manage our “furry friends.”

Deer:

  • Drive at a (reasonable) constant speed: do not suddenly slow down or speed up
  • Culling deer usually makes the problem worse, so
  • There are several on-market replants, but they must be used correctly
  • Very the plants in your yard, there are plants that deter deer (see link below)

Cats:

  • The Human Society will capture, tag, and spay/neuter, any stray and feral cats, and return back to the area.
  • There are repellants and devices that you can purchase to detract cats from yard
  • Collar and tag your cats. Also, help save birds by putting bells on your cats.
  • Protect your cats by monitoring them when they are outdoors.

Dogs:

  • Regardless of size, keep your dogs on a leash. It’s the law.
  • Clean up behind your dog
  • Beware of DC dog tethering laws – dogs must have food, water and be able to escape harm

Barking dogs – Nuisance barking is against the law
